“The time has come. Thank you for every match, every moment of joy, every tear and every dream we have shared. Representing the Colombian national team has been the greatest honour of my life. Thank you, Colombia. Forever,” Rodríguez wrote on social media.

The midfielder made 131 appearances for the national team and scored 31 goals. The highlight of his career was the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. On that occasion, Rodríguez scored six times and was crowned the tournament’s top scorer.

James’s last major tournament for the national team was the 2026 World Cup. Colombia reached the round of 16, where they lost to Switzerland on penalties.

How much has the Colombian earned during his career?

Throughout his career, Rodríguez played for Porto, Monaco, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Everton and other clubs. The exact total of his career earnings has not been publicly disclosed. However, a number of open sources estimate the footballer’s net worth at approximately $75–80 million.

His main sources of income were club contracts, sponsorship deals and his own business ventures. Following his successful 2014 World Cup campaign, Rodríguez secured major sponsorship deals, including one with Adidas. In 2015, Forbes estimated his total annual income from football and sponsorship at $29 million.

As well as football, James is involved in business. His ventures include the Dos Molinos coffee chain in Colombia, the Gold 10 drinks range, and investments in the restaurant industry and property.
