Frequently asked questions

Why does the rate at an exchange office differ from the NBM rate?

The National Bank of Moldova rate is an official reference rate that banks and exchange offices use as a benchmark, but they set their own buy/sell rates based on commissions, costs and market conditions. That is why the rate at a specific exchange office can differ from the NBM rate by a few percent.

How often is the rate on this page updated?

Rates are updated automatically based on data published by the National Bank of Moldova every business day. On weekends and holidays the page shows the rate from the last business day.

What do "buy rate" and "sell rate" mean?

The buy rate is the price at which an exchange office buys currency from you, and the sell rate is the price at which it sells it to you. The difference between them (the spread) is the exchange office's margin. The NBM rate on this page is an average reference value, not a specific bank's buy or sell rate.

Can the exchange offices shown on the map be trusted?

The map shows banks and exchange offices licensed by the National Bank of Moldova to perform currency operations. The list is regularly checked against the official NBM registries. Before visiting, we recommend confirming the current rate and opening hours by phone.

What should I be aware of when exchanging large amounts?

For large amounts, the rate may be negotiated individually — check it in advance with the bank or exchange office by phone or online. Also keep in mind cash transaction limits and identification requirements when exchanging amounts above the legally established threshold.
