Turkish billionaire Hamdi Akyn’s aeroplane has crashed

The aeroplane belonging to Turkish billionaire Hamdi Akyn caught fire after rolling beyond the end of the runway at Misrata Airport in Libya. The crew were on board; there were no passengers.

The Cessna Citation Latitude business jet took off from Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport and was heading for Libya. Upon landing in Misrata, the aircraft veered off the runway and subsequently caught fire, according to AirportHaber.

According to BKNJET Havacılık A.Ş., the company operating the aircraft, there were three crew members on board. All were evacuated; there were no fatalities or injuries.

Hamdi Akyun himself confirmed to journalists that the aircraft was operating a flight without passengers.

BKNJET stated that, since the accident, it has been cooperating with civil aviation authorities and other relevant agencies, which are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

The cause of the incident has not yet been established.

Hamdi Akyun and his family’s fortune is estimated at $2.6 billion. The businessman is the owner of the Turkish construction and investment group Akfen.
