The meeting took place on 15 September 2026, with the participation of representatives from NATO member states and partner countries contributing to the KFOR operation.
During the meeting, the KFOR commander, Major General Özkan Ulutaș, presented an assessment of the security situation in Kosovo and the mission’s efforts to ensure a safe environment for all communities and freedom of movement, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
Viorel Cibotaru also reaffirmed the Republic of Moldova’s firm commitment to continuing its participation in KFOR, a contribution that has been maintained without interruption for the past 12 years.
“The peaceful resolution of existing issues, whilst respecting the rights of all communities, remains essential for establishing lasting peace and consolidating stability throughout the Western Balkans region,” the ambassador noted.
Furthermore, as stated in NATO’s official press release, the Western Balkans are of strategic importance to the Alliance:
“NATO’s commitment to supporting sustainable security in Kosovo and regional stability remains firm. NATO also continues to strongly support the dialogue facilitated by the European Union for the normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, as a mechanism for resolving outstanding issues, whilst respecting the rights of all communities.”
