
Among other things, Hungary actively imports Moldovan fruit and fruit juices (mainly concentrated) and shelled walnuts. There is steady demand for electrical transformers assembled in Moldova (exports totalling around $6.8 million).
Fruit juices (predominantly concentrated apple and grape) are a key export, as are tinned fruit and vegetables, jams and confectionery. There is also huge demand on the German market for Moldovan plums, with supplies having increased tenfold in recent years.
Despite such rapid growth in exports to the Hungarian and German markets, Romania remains by far Moldova’s main trading partner (accounting for over 28 per cent of all exports).
At the same time, the European Union is a key market for Moldovan producers — around 65.3 per cent of the republic’s total exports go to EU countries.
In the first seven months of 2026, exports to the main markets developed as follows:
- Hungary – +89.3%
- Germany – +67.6%
- United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland – +36.0%
- Italy – +27.7%
- Turkey – +27.3%
- Russian Federation – +13.0%
- Poland – +12.5%
- Romania – +8.2%.
Looking at the overall structure of Moldova’s trade in 2026, the following commodity groups showed the strongest growth:
- Vegetable oils – exports surged by almost 83 per cent.
- Cereals and cereal-based products — a 1.7-fold increase.
- Leather goods – exports increased by 65.6 per cent.
- Fruit and vegetables – an 18.3 per cent increase.
At the level of individual goods, there was growth in exports of works of art, collectors’ items and antiques (+82.2 per cent), non-ferrous metals (+35.3 per cent), footwear (+17.7 per cent), chemical products (+11.4 per cent), and timber and timber products (+10.3 per cent).
Overall, during this period, the total volume of goods exported from Moldova rose by 11.7 per cent and came very close to the €2 billion mark. The main driver of this growth was goods produced domestically (domestic exports rose by 15.6 per cent).
