ABS 2000, a Moldovan waste management and recycling company, announced the opening of a glass recycling plant in the city of Buzău in southeastern Romania. The investment totaled approximately 7.4 million euros ($8.6 million).

During the first two weeks of September, the release of water from the Dniester Reservoir downstream will be reduced from the current 75 to 60 cubic meters per second.

At the end of the workweek, Environment Minister Gheorghe Hazder reported a record-low water inflow from the Carpathians into the Dniester Reservoir—14 cubic meters per second. This negative trend directly affects water flow in the lower Dniester. In light of this, the minister once again urged all consumers to use water responsibly. According to some experts, the problem lies in the fact that water from the Dniester is used by residents on both the right and left banks of the river. And there appears to be no coordination of this process between the authorities on the right and left banks of Moldova.

Reducing the risk of flooding and protecting the country’s population, infrastructure, and agricultural land from this natural disaster — this is the primary objective of the new risk management plans for 2026–2031, approved by the Moldovan government for the Dniester and Danube-Prut river basins, as well as the Black Sea. The plans are tailored to the current conditions of the rivers, the impacts of climate change, and the increasing risk of heavy rainfall and flash floods.

A delegation from the Republic of Moldova is, after all, participating in the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17), which is taking place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from August 17–28. This is the very same forum for which Prime Minister Vasile Tofan had criticized government officials for their potential participation, considering this business trip not the best use of their working time.

The inflow of water from the Carpathians into the Dniester Reservoir has dropped to 23 cubic meters per second, and the water level in the reservoir is below 112.5 meters. Meanwhile, the outflow from the reservoir downstream remains, for now, at the level agreed upon by the Moldovan-Ukrainian Commission on the Dniester—75 cubic meters per second. Nevertheless, the relevant departments of the Odessa administration are “considering the option of hourly water supply.”

The center will be located on public land approximately 6 km from the village of Șerpeni in the Anenii Noi district — at a safe distance from populated areas and water sources.

The extremely difficult situation regarding water resources in the Dniester River (sharp decline in water levels) and other bodies of water that arose in Moldova this summer is a natural consequence of the authorities’ long-standing indifference to this critical issue.
