The ceremony highlighted the importance of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Those present observed a minute’s silence in memory of those who lost their lives.
The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, emphasised in her speech that the tragedy of 11 September was not merely an attack on the US, but also a blow to the very foundations of free societies. According to the President, those events hold particular significance for the Republic of Moldova as well.
“11 September was an attack on the United States, but it was also an attack on the principles upon which free societies are built: human dignity, freedom and the right of every person to think, speak, believe and choose freely,” said Maia Sandu.
Sandu also emphasised that the US remains an important partner for the Republic of Moldova.
“The United States has been a friend and an important partner on our journey. We deeply appreciate what America has defended over generations: the belief that people must be free to determine their own lives, and that states must be free to determine their own futures. Twenty-five years on from 11 September, these principles remain more important than ever,” she noted.
In closing her speech, the president declared that terrorism and authoritarianism cannot overcome the free will of society.
The ceremony also paid tribute to Arkadi Zaltsman, an architect originally from Chișinău who designed several important buildings in the Moldovan capital and who lost his life in the World Trade Centre.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the tragedy that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people.
