The document is on the agenda for the meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 16 September. The proposed agreement aims to facilitate travel by representatives of the two states for official and diplomatic purposes.

Moldova and Mongolia established diplomatic relations in 1992. The two countries do not have embassies in each other’s capitals, and diplomatic contacts are maintained through representative offices accredited on a combined basis.

Trade and economic relations between the two countries also remain limited. Recently, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Vasile Tofan, expressed his dissatisfaction with a request from one of the state secretaries to undertake a visit to Mongolia.

“Approval for a visit to Mongolia, once again at the level of a state secretary, takes just nine days. I do not believe it is a good use of our time to spend nine days in Mongolia, plus the journey there, which takes a very long time,” said Tofan.

Mongolia outstrips Moldova primarily in terms of land area, population, economic growth rate and export volume. At the same time, Moldova has advantages in terms of population density, access to drinking water, the level of public debt and a number of social indicators.

Mongolia’s public debt at the end of 2025 stood at approximately 45.11 per cent of GDP.
