Gagauzia
This view is expressed by members of the ‘Alliance of Moldovans’ party, which has officially announced its decision to take part in the elections for the Bashkan of Gagauzia, due to take place on 15 November. The party will field a candidate for the post of Bashkan, as well as candidates in all the region’s constituencies.
It is based on the premise that the autonomy possesses strong agricultural traditions, recognised potential in winemaking, a skilled workforce and a favourable geographical location for establishing trade links with neighbouring regions. These resources could form the basis of a strong regional economy, provided they are supported by appropriate government policies.
The party therefore regards industrialisation as the main direction for the region’s development. Restoring production capacity, attracting investment in the processing of local agricultural produce, and modernising transport and energy infrastructure can create stable and well-paid jobs. These measures are essential to halt the outflow of labour and the decline in population in the villages and towns of Gagauzia – a phenomenon that poses a serious threat to the region’s future.
At the same time, alongside economic development, it is necessary to guarantee and protect the region’s autonomous status, as provided for by current legislation. The party believes that Gagauz autonomy is a historical and legal guarantee achieved through dialogue and compromise, and that full respect for this status remains a key condition for stable relations between the region and the central government.
