The Ministry maintains that the stock of textbooks has been significantly updated in recent years. Of the 281 titles used in the education system, 165 were printed between 2023 and 2026. The average age of the textbooks is 3.9 years. However, only 35 titles, or 12 per cent, are more than six years old.
“This does not mean that we can allow torn, dirty books or books with missing pages to be distributed. We ask schools to withdraw them from use and contact the Textbook Fund to have them replaced,” said Galina Rusu, Secretary-General of the relevant ministry.
According to the data, more than 2.5 million copies of textbooks were printed in Moldova between 2023 and 2026. Following the approval of the new curriculum, school textbooks will be reprinted in accordance with the new quality standards.
The statement followed a demand by “Our Party” MP Nicolae Margarint to hear from the Minister for Education and Research, Dan Perchun, regarding the condition of the textbooks issued to pupils at the start of the new academic year.
Margarint drew attention to numerous complaints from parents who had sent photographs of torn, damaged and dirty textbooks. The MP demanded an explanation for the actual shortage of textbooks and asked for details of the measures being taken by the ministry to ensure that every pupil receives textbooks in good condition. According to data presented by the MP, the Ministry of Education has announced the publication of 105 new titles of textbooks for 2026 and the allocation of approximately 150 million lei for this programme.
