The Minister for Labour and Social Protection, Natalia Plugaru, stated that the duration of the support should be determined according to the family’s specific circumstances and the ability of its members to return to the labour market.
“These changes were made, I believe, about two years ago, when the programme in question was completely overhauled and, indeed, the criteria were, so to speak, streamlined. Now we want to do even more, and examine the situation even more rigorously, for example by setting a time limit on how long you can remain on social assistance,” said Natalia Plugaru on Radio Moldova.
According to the minister, any such limit cannot be applied uniformly to all families:
“When we provide social assistance, well, it is intended to be managed by the parents, but what if it is a family with five children and the children are very young, or a single mother who is unable, for example, to go out to work or because there is no nursery in the local area? In that case, for how long do we provide this social assistance? A year, half a year, or until we allow them to return to work and send the children to nursery?”
In this context, the minister says that the authorities are set to establish the exact criteria and the maximum duration for which the support will be granted, so that the system takes into account both the family’s vulnerability and its ability to return to work.
