Moldova is to invest €59 million in the development of the water supply system from the Dniester to Chișinău

A new phase in the development of the water supply system in central Moldova is beginning: 14 institutions and operators have signed a cooperation agreement as part of the ‘Programul Deschis de Dezvoltare Urbană’ project.

The project involves the construction of a new water intake on the Dniester, two pumping stations and connecting pipelines to supply water to Chișinău, the Strășeni and Călărași districts.

The German government, through the KfW Development Bank, has provided a grant of €14 million for the implementation of this new project.

The project is intended to complement an investment project already underway to improve water supply infrastructure in central Moldova. It involves the construction of the Chișinău–Strășeni–Călărași main water pipeline and its connection to Apă-Canal Chișinău. This project is estimated to cost €45 million.

Thus, the two linked projects involve funding totalling €59 million – a €14 million grant for the new water intake complex and €45 million for the development of the main infrastructure.

Cooperation in the interests of all stakeholders

The new water intake on the Dniester will serve as the water source for the system being established. However, this is not solely about supplying water to Chișinău. The infrastructure is also intended to supply water to the Strășeni and Călărași districts, linking the water source on the Dniester with the central part of the country.

The signed agreement sets out the areas of responsibility for the 14 institutions and organisations involved in implementing the project.

The Centre Regional Development Agency, which is the project contractor, will be responsible for technical and financial coordination, the preparation of project documentation, procurement and construction works.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development will provide strategic coordination and institutional support for the project.

Local authorities and operators in Chișinău, Strășeni and Călărași will be involved in preparing the necessary infrastructure and organising the future operation of the water supply system.

As part of the associated project, Apă-Canal Chișinău is to act as the wholesale water supplier and future operator of the main water pipeline.
