Ambassador Vladimir Cuc presented the joint statement by the Republic of Moldova and the WHO during the interactive dialogue on the report of the UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to water and sanitation.
The Republic of Moldova, which holds the chairmanship of the Protocol on Water and Health for the period 2026–2028, drew attention to the fact that sanitation continues to receive less attention and fewer investments than access to drinking water. Those most affected by these inequalities are people in vulnerable situations.
“The Republic of Moldova emphasised that access to sanitation continues to receive less attention and investment than access to drinking water, and that those most affected are people in vulnerable situations. In this context, the Republic of Moldova highlighted the role of the Protocol on Water and Health, which provides states with practical tools to improve access to water, sanitation and hygiene, including in schools and hospitals, as well as to reduce inequalities.”
Looking ahead to the 2026 UN Water Conference, which will take place in December in Abu Dhabi, the Republic of Moldova has called on states to give sanitation the necessary political attention and to accelerate action to ensure equitable access to water and sanitation for all.
The Republic of Moldova is holding the presidency of the Protocol on Water and Health for the first time, for the period 2026–2028. This mandate reflects the country’s active role in promoting policies on access to safe water, sanitation and the protection of public health.
