During the meeting, the MAIA minister emphasised the need for state agricultural policy to be underpinned by reliable data and the results of economic analysis. Support measures for farmers during Moldova’s preparations for accession to the European Union must also be based on these. “We need to rethink our approach to agricultural development and state intervention in this sector. We need an analysis of each sector so that decisions take account of the realities on the ground. In the coming years, Moldovan agriculture must develop in line with European standards,” said Eugen Osmochescu.
For his part, the FAO representative expressed the organisation’s readiness to support the strengthening of the MAIA’s analytical capacity, including through specialised research and the assessment of value chains. In this regard, he mentioned the FAO’s technical assistance project on the modernisation of agricultural statistics, implemented in cooperation with the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova.
In this context, the parties discussed the preparation of the new FAO country framework programme for the period 2028–2032, which will set out the priorities for Moldova’s cooperation with the organisation. The FAO representative expressed the organisation’s interest in supporting the Partnership Platform in the agri-food sector and proposed organising its third high-level meeting in 2027. Another topic of discussion was the creation of a trilateral cooperation platform in the agri-food sector involving the Republic of Moldova, Romania and Ukraine, which is particularly relevant in the context of logistical challenges facing Ukrainian grain exports.
Over the past few years, the FAO’s support for Moldova’s agricultural sector has focused on mitigating the effects of climate change and helping smallholder farmers adapt to the new realities of agricultural production.
