Logos Press has already reported on the government’s preparation of the relevant proposals. Around 51,000 people fall under the new provisions of the document, including workers at sole traders’ businesses and peasant farms, licence holders, retailers, market gardeners, as well as those engaged in the procurement and harvesting of plant products.
At present, these categories of people are only provided with old-age pensions and death benefits. The new provisions will allow them to voluntarily opt for broader social protection by including them in the full social insurance system.
“With these changes, we are offering these people the opportunity to be fully insured under the state social insurance system and to benefit from all the entitlements provided for by law, including sick pay, maternity benefits, child care allowances, unemployment benefits and other social benefits,” said Felicia Bechtoldt, State Secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection.
To receive social benefits, self-employed workers will need to submit a written application to a branch of the National Social Insurance Fund, in which they can opt to pay an increased fixed contribution in accordance with the provisions of the Law on the State Social Insurance Budget. At the same time, the wives of self-employed workers will also be eligible to receive maternity benefits.
