Discussions started on the concept of Moldova’s agricultural sustainability program

The process of developing the National Program for Agricultural Resilience for the period 2027-2030 was discussed by representatives of agri-food sector associations with the leadership of the MAIA Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The purpose of the dialog is to collect information and proposals from the economic actors of this sector on the implementation of advanced production and commercial models, as well as the adaptation of the rural economy to climate change.

During the meeting, the associations were informed about the questionnaire through which information and judgments of agribusinessmen will be collected. The information provided by the sector representatives will be used during the analysis phase and to define the activities to be included in the program. MAIA representatives assured the meeting participants that the program is still in the concept definition phase. Once this process is completed, the document will be published on the Ministry’s website.

In turn, the leaders of associations noted that measures related to the application of irrigation, agricultural insurance, drought-resistant crops and conservation agriculture, restoration of forest belts, research and subsidies should be analyzed together and compared with the real needs on the ground.

An inter-ministerial working group with representatives of associations and academia will be established in the program development process. The discussions emphasized the importance of involving academia and research institutions to ensure that proposed actions are based on data, research and practical experience.

The National Program for Agricultural Resilience 2027-2030 is to be developed by the end of 2026. The process will involve development partners, in particular the United Nations Office (FAO) in the Republic of Moldova under the project “Strengthening Competitiveness and Resilience to Climate Risks of Smallholder Farmers in the Republic of Moldova”. FAO will provide support in the form of technical expertise, consulting and stakeholder contacts.
