At this time, five women and three men are officially running for the position of secretary-general:
- Yvonne A-Baki, a diplomat from Ecuador and the country’s former Minister of Industry and Productivity;
- Olara Otunnu, a former foreign minister of Uganda who served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflict from 1997 to 2005;
- Caroline Rodriguez-Birkett, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guyana;
- Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador;
- Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile, who served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2018 to 2022;
- Rafael Grossi of Argentina, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA);
- Rebecca Greenspan of Costa Rica, Head of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD);
- Macky Sall, former President of Senegal.
On January 1, 2027, the United Nations will have a new leader. António Guterres is stepping down after serving the maximum term of 10 years (two five-year terms).
His successor will not only have to tackle complex political and financial challenges but also continue to implement reforms at the United Nations.
