UN considers eight candidates for next secretary-general

The UN is narrowing down the list of candidates for the position of secretary-general

Eight candidates for the position of Secretary-General of the organization took part in “interactive dialogues” at the UN headquarters in New York. They were given the opportunity to present their views and explain why they are the best candidates for the position. The discussions could be followed online.

At this time, five women and three men are officially running for the position of secretary-general:

  • Yvonne A-Baki, a diplomat from Ecuador and the country’s former Minister of Industry and Productivity;
  • Olara Otunnu, a former foreign minister of Uganda who served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflict from 1997 to 2005;
  • Caroline Rodriguez-Birkett, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guyana;
  • Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador;
  • Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile, who served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2018 to 2022;
  • Rafael Grossi of Argentina, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA);
  • Rebecca Greenspan of Costa Rica, Head of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD);
  • Macky Sall, former President of Senegal.

On January 1, 2027, the United Nations will have a new leader. António Guterres is stepping down after serving the maximum term of 10 years (two five-year terms).

His successor will not only have to tackle complex political and financial challenges but also continue to implement reforms at the United Nations.
