Council of Europe foreign ministers to meet in Chisinau in May

A ministerial session of the Council of Europe will be held in Chisinau on May 14-15, 2026, with the participation of foreign ministers from 46 member states. This was said at a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Mihai Popşoi and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, in Strasbourg.

Popşoi said that the upcoming meeting will be a key international event and will mark the completion of Moldova’s chairmanship in the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

During the talks, the sides discussed organizational aspects of the ministerial session and highlighted the importance of the events held in Chisinau earlier within the Moldovan chairmanship, including conferences on the European Social Charter and on countering disinformation.

The sides stressed the 30-year history of cooperation between Moldova and the Council of Europe, as well as the organization’s contribution to the consolidation of democratic institutions, the rule of law and the protection of human rights in the country.

Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset reiterated support for the Moldovan authorities’ efforts and praised the high level of preparation for the upcoming ministerial session in Chisinau.

Assistance to Ukraine

The sides also discussed the regional security situation, including the consequences of the war in Ukraine and the need for a coordinated European response.

During the meeting, an agreement was signed between the Council of Europe and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Moldova’s voluntary contribution to the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine and support for the implementation of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence.

In Strasbourg, Mihai Popşoi also had a meeting with the president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Petra Bair, where they discussed cooperation issues and Moldova’s role within the chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers.

On this occasion, the deputy prime minister left an entry in the “Golden Book” of the chairmanship of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, emphasizing the PACE’s role in consolidating democracy in the context of the current geopolitical changes.
