Constantin Cuimju accused the parliamentary majority of causing legislative chaos: “Laws are being passed faster than lawmakers have time to read them.”

Member of Parliament Constantin Cuimju criticized the way in which the PDS parliamentary majority is pushing through bills, stating that there is no proper legislative process and that parliamentary committee meetings have become a mere formality prior to voting in the plenary chamber.

According to the lawmaker, today, within the course of a single day, lawmakers were summoned twice to a meeting of the Committee on Economy, Budget, and Finance, including to consider bills that had been introduced just a few hours before the meeting.

“At 9:00 a.m., I attended a meeting of the Committee on Economy, Budget, and Finance, where we reviewed two bills. Then there was a plenary session of Parliament. And now, at 3:00 p.m., we are being summoned again to a committee meeting to review bills that were registered only yesterday and even today, with the aim of putting them to a vote in the plenary session on the very same day,” said Constantin Cuimju.

The lawmaker noted that this practice deprives parliamentarians of the opportunity to carefully review the content of the documents and objectively assess their implications.

“When did the deputies have time to read them, analyze them, and understand their content? It seems that for most members of the PDS, this no longer matters at all,” said Cuimju.

In his view, fast-tracking the passage of laws undermines the quality of the legislative process and effectively devalues the role of parliament.

“Laws are being passed as if on an assembly line, rather than through a serious legislative process,” the lawmaker concluded.

The chaos will continue

Today, the Standing Bureau approved the agenda for the plenary session of parliament on July 24.

Lawmakers will consider 23 bills in a single day, 12 of which concern the harmonization of national legislation with the European Union’s acquis communautaire.
