According to ANSA, the inspections covered livestock identification, documents of origin, husbandry conditions and transport regulations. Around 76 per cent of the farms inspected rectified the identified breaches in accordance with the inspectors’ instructions.
However, the inspections also revealed serious breaches. Near the Central Market in Chișinău, inspectors, together with patrol officers, stopped a vehicle transporting two beef carcasses in unsanitary conditions and without any documentation; the unsafe meat was subsequently withdrawn from circulation immediately. A further inspection at the farm in the Calarasi district, from where the meat originated, revealed more than 25 head of cattle that had neither tags nor documents of origin, and the operation itself was being run illegally. The animals have been isolated and placed in quarantine; if the owners fail to produce the required documentation, the animals will be slaughtered and the meat disposed of. ANSA emphasises that the lack of traceability makes it impossible to monitor diseases and poses a direct threat to public health.
In light of this, the agency urges consumers to buy meat only from authorised outlets and to avoid unregulated street trading or sales from vehicles. Animal owners are reminded of the need to check documentation before purchasing livestock, and it is noted that the identification of animals on private smallholdings and the issuance of transport certificates are provided free of charge.
