Each of the 2,977 drones symbolised a human life lost as a result of the largest terrorist attack in US history. The project was created with the participation of the families of the deceased, survivors and emergency service personnel as a modern addition to the traditional annual ‘Tribute in Light’ installation.
As reported by Logos Press, on the morning of 11 September 2001, the terrorist group Al-Qaeda carried out a series of coordinated attacks in the US. Four hijacked passenger aircraft were flown into the World Trade Centre towers in Manhattan, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.
As a result of the attacks, 2,977 people lost their lives – US citizens and nationals of more than 80 other countries. Every year on 11 September, memorial services are held in the United States and around the world to honour the victims of the tragedy.
