In Moldova, events will take place in the districts of Edinet, Drochia, Florești, Glodeni, Nisporeni, Strășeni, Hîncești, Dubăsari, Anenii Noi, Ialoveni, and Căușeni.
The program includes tours, workshops, concerts, historical reenactments, and meetings with local residents. In several communities, special attention is being paid to preserving intangible cultural heritage and passing on traditions to the younger generation.
What’s on offer for visitors
In Hynkeuț, Yedinets District, Casa Amintirilor will host an “Living Traditions” evening, during which visitors can participate in workshops on embroidering traditional scarves, decorating Easter eggs, and making candles. The program also includes tastings of homemade placinte and herbal tea.
In the village of Sofia in the Drokievsky District, the Museum of History and Ethnography will host an event titled “Diaspora at Home on Museum Night in the Village.” In addition to workshops on weaving, knitting, and embroidery, visitors will be able to watch traditional platsinds being prepared in an oven in the museum’s courtyard. The evening will conclude with a concert featuring folk songs and dances. The museum itself is located in the former estate of the Hasnash noble family, built in 1848.
The Local History Museum in Pelinia, also in the Drokievsky District, will offer participants a workshop on making traditional rugs. The program includes an introduction to weaving techniques and the symbolism of the patterns. Special attention is given to teens aged 12–16 and adults, for whom the event will be an opportunity to learn about this traditional craft.
In Florești, visitors can enjoy guided tours, an introduction to museum artifacts, an interactive game for children and youth called “Find the Museum’s Treasure,” as well as a workshop on traditional embroidery and the creation of a national shirt—the “iya.”
In Kobani, Glodeni District, the Museum of History and Ethnography is organizing themed exhibitions, presentations, demonstrations, and workshops on traditional crafts involving children, youth, and adults.
In Grozesti, Nisporen District, the “Zestria Satului” Gallery-Museum will kick off the program with a children’s tour by flashlight. This will be followed by a reenactment of the traditional “Peparuda” ritual, and in the evening, a gathering titled “Longing for the Family Home” featuring representatives of the diaspora.
The Museum of History and Ethnography in the village of Boldurești will present a collection comprising more than 2,200 photographs and documents, as well as ethnographic and archaeological artifacts, antique books, and icons. The program includes cultural and educational events as well as creative workshops. A separate program, “A Little Astronomer in the Universe,” will allow participants to observe the starry sky through a telescope.
The Village’s History Through People, Objects, and Memories
At the Ralli family estate in Dolne, a branch of the Alexander Pushkin House-Museum, visitors will be offered guided tours and a contest with prizes. The former noble summer residence houses exhibits dedicated to the Ralli family and Alexander Pushkin’s stay in Bessarabia. The site has the status of a historical and architectural monument of national significance.
The museum in Fundul-Galbenei, Hîncești District, will present the village’s history through music, traditional costumes, photographs, and stories from residents. Among the events are the exhibition “Portraits Through Time—Places and Homes, People Who Shaped the Village’s History” and a meeting with the community’s oldest residents. Their memories of childhood, weddings, holidays, farm work, and customs will be used to create a future audio archive of the village.
An evening event titled “Among the Stories of the Village of Dorotska” will take place in Dorotska, Dubossary District. Visitors will be able to explore the permanent exhibition, participate in the intergenerational program “Stories Told by Grandmothers and Grandfathers,” and take part in the educational initiative “Little Museum Researchers.”
The “Casa Dorului” Ethnographic Museum in Telica, Anenii Noi District, will combine history, theater, music, and folk dance. Visitors can look forward to stories and memories shared by local residents, skits based on local traditions, musical performances, and folk dances.
In Horești, in the Ialomița County, the program will be geared toward children. As part of a culinary event, they will learn about the history of traditional dishes, including sarmal and stuffed peppers, take part in the “Little Chefs” workshop, and explore antique kitchen utensils.
The Keușen Museum of History, Ethnography, and Art offers guided tours of its permanent exhibitions. Among the collections on display are the traditional “Casa Mare,” featuring household items, rugs, furniture, ceramics, tools, and musical instruments, as well as documents and works from the art gallery.
Museums as Spaces for Preserving Rural Heritage
In total, more than 170 museums, collections, and cultural heritage sites in rural areas are participating in this year’s “Museum Night in the Village.” Moldovan participants are joining the initiative alongside more than 160 sites in Romania.
What makes this project unique is that the museum program goes beyond the traditional display of exhibits. Visitors are invited not only to view the collections but also to participate in craft workshops, sample traditional dishes, listen to stories from local residents, and learn about the rituals and culture of specific communities.
For rural communities, this is also an opportunity to draw attention to their local heritage and preserve knowledge that is primarily passed down within families and across generations.
The fourth edition of “Museum Night in the Village” will take place on August 29, 2026. The event is organized by the Da’DeCe Association, the ASTRA National Museum Complex in Sibiu, and the Dr. Gheorghe Telea-Bologa Memorial Center Association in Sibiu, in partnership with the National Museum Network of Romania.
