According to the company’s management, current projects at the plant will be suspended by the end of January. This will affect around 85 per cent of the plant’s 1,100 employees.

Draexlmaier began production in Serbia in 2008 and has since expanded its plant in Zrenjanin on several occasions.

Earlier this year, the Independent Trade Union of Metalworkers of Serbia (SSMS) warned that the local automotive industry was facing a sharp decline in production volumes and mass redundancies due to weak demand on the European market. According to the SSMS, in 2025, 12,640 workers in the automotive sector were placed on paid leave (receiving 60 per cent of their monthly salary) for a period exceeding the statutory limit of 45 working days, whilst more than 6,000 people were made redundant — including at the Draexlmaier plant.

The Draexlmaier Group, founded in 1958, ranks among the world’s top 100 automotive component suppliers. It operates at more than 60 production sites across 20 countries, and its total global workforce numbers around 60,000.

In 2025, the group’s turnover reached 5 billion euros. In our region, the company also has a presence in Moldova, Romania and North Macedonia.

The Draexlmaier Group entered Moldova in 2007, opening its first production facility in the Bălți Free Economic Zone. A second plant was opened in 2011. In 2017, Draexlmaier opened a Product Development Office in Chișinău, and in 2018 the group expanded its operations to Cahul. Currently, Draexlmaier’s branches in Moldova employ over 5,000 staff.
