On this occasion, Maya Sandu presented Salome Zurabishvili with the “Order of the Republic”. According to the press service of the Moldovan President, the highest state award was conferred on her on May 26, 2025, on the Independence Day of Georgia, as a sign of “recognition of her merits in the defense of democratic values, preservation and promotion of human dignity, human rights and peace, as well as for the consistent struggle for the European future of Georgia”.

The Head of State also addressed warm congratulations to the Georgian people on the occasion of Independence Day, which is celebrated on May 26.

“Moldova stands in solidarity with the Georgian people – it supports their struggle for sovereignty and democracy and shares their hope for a European future,” the President emphasized.

Salome Zurabishvili is the fifth president of Georgia. She completed her powers in December 2024 due to the expiration of her mandate. Her departure was accompanied by a political crisis. She did not recognize the legitimacy of the country’s new political course and after her resignation she actually became the leader of the opposition.

Zurabishvili recently called on opposition forces to prepare for early parliamentary elections, despite the categorical position of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
