Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made this statement at a press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to RBC.
“Our territory was used for such a meeting without our knowledge. I cannot comment on the details, as we were not present at the meeting. However, flight data allows me to confirm that a secret meeting in Baku did indeed take place,” the publication quotes Aliyev as saying.
“If this meeting was intended to help end the war between Russia and Ukraine, we can only welcome it,” the Azerbaijani leader added.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, for his part, stated that he knew nothing about such a meeting.
RBC notes that earlier, the British newspaper The Times, citing sources, reported that initiatives torestore communication channels with Russia had intensified in Germany. According to the publication, various options for possible mediation in contacts with Moscow are being discussed in Berlin.
