The coin joins the “Historical Events” series and is dedicated to “the memory of the victims of one of the most tragic events in the modern history of the region,” according to the departmental press service.

“The famine of 1946-1947 was one of the biggest humanitarian disasters that befell the Republic of Moldova in the XX century. It was not a natural disaster, but a consequence of the authoritarian and repressive policy of the Soviet regime. The Day of Remembrance of the Victims of this historical drama, celebrated in April, is a day to pay tribute to those who suffered or died from hunger during the Soviet regime. It is a moral and historical duty not to forget this dark period of our past. Thus, the coin has not only numismatic, but also symbolic and educational value, contributing to the formation and transmission of collective memory to future generations,” the NBM states.

Each copy of the coin is packed in a transparent capsule made of metal acrylate and a gift box, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Mrs. Anca Dragu.

Anca Dragu’s words also sound mournful:

“Commemorating the famine of 1946-1947 is more than just an act of grief – it is an acceptance of our European identity, based on truth, dignity and unwavering respect for human life. Moldova’s European path is based precisely on these values, which cannot be forgotten and which condemn the totalitarian abuses of the past. Integration into the big European family means, first of all, belonging to a space of peace and security, where state institutions, including the National Bank, work to guarantee that the welfare of the citizen will never again be sacrificed to ideologies,” Mrs. Anca Dragu said on this occasion.

The certificate contains a QR code allowing direct access to detailed information on the characteristics of the coin, posted on the official website of the institution.

The commemorative coin is made of silver, has a nominal value of 50 lei and is issued in an edition of 1000 copies. The graphic design was developed by Andrei Popa.
