Most companies are going out of business in Bucharest. From January through May, 606 new bankruptcies were registered there—nearly one in five bankruptcy proceedings in the country. Compared to the same period last year, the figure rose by another 5.57%.
According to Digi24, following the capital in the “anti-ranking” are the counties of Bihor (212 cases), Cluj (189), Timiș (145), Ilfov (140), and Prahova (109). While the number of bankruptcies declined slightly in Bihor and Cluj, it continued to rise in Timiș, Ilfov, and Prahova.
A completely different picture is observed in smaller regions. The fewest insolvency cases were recorded in Covasna—only 14, Harghita—16, Botoșani—17, as well as in Mehedinți and Sălaj—21 each. In Teleorman, 22 bankruptcies were registered.
In May alone, 622 companies and self-employed individuals (PFAs) in Romania entered bankruptcy proceedings. Bucharest once again led the list, with 119 such cases filed. Next were Bihor with 49 cases, Cluj with 38, and Ilfov with 33.
The most challenging situation is in the retail sector. In the first five months of the year, 190 bankruptcies were recorded in the wholesale and retail trade sector—a 352.38% increase compared to a year ago. The construction industry ranked second with 171 cases, showing the sharpest increase at 510.71%. Rounding out the top three is the manufacturing industry, where the number of bankruptcies reached 99, an increase of 312.50%.
