The Romanian Border Police report that, together with Romanian Customs, they are operating at the limits of their infrastructure’s capacity, and checks are being carried out without interruption.
According to the authorities, the problem is caused by the very large number of lorries arriving for inspection, particularly from Ukraine. The capacity for handling freight on the route between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine via Reni has been exceeded.
The situation is further complicated by the short distance between the border crossing points at Galați, Giurgiulești and Reni. Around 20 lorries, which have already completed all the formalities for leaving Romania, are waiting in the area between the borders, reports monitoruldegalati.ro.
Reasons for the traffic jams
According to the Moldovan authorities, the increase in traffic is also linked to the security situation in Ukraine. Following the attacks on the Orlovka border crossing, hauliers have switched their routes to Galați. Upon entering Ukraine, these vehicles are subject to additional checks.
At the same time, at the Reni border crossing, the Ukrainian authorities are allowing lorries to enter in groups of no more than five vehicles, so that they can be quickly dispersed in the event of an attack.
Furthermore, during an air raid alert on Ukrainian territory, border and customs control operations at the Reni border crossing were completely suspended.
Drivers are advised to choose other border crossing points
To avoid delays at the Galati border crossing, the authorities recommend that hauliers consider other border crossings open to heavy traffic into the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine:
– the Albita border crossing – Republic of Moldova;
– Oancha border crossing – Republic of Moldova;
– the Sculeț border crossing – Republic of Moldova;
– Siret border crossing – Ukraine;
– the Vicovu de Sus border crossing – Ukraine.
