The National Bank’s foreign exchange reserves have reached a new all-time high

The National Bank of Moldova’s (NBM) official reserve assets have shown a steady upward trend in August. According to preliminary data from the financial regulator, gross reserves in the euro reached an interim figure of approximately 5.39 billion euros as of August 21, compared to 5.2 billion euros at the end of July.

The August inflow of liquidity—apparently from foreign partners—allowed the central bank to fully offset the minor spring and summer declines and raise the level of support for the national economy to a new high.

By the middle of the reporting month (August 14), assets accelerated their growth and reached a peak of 5,415.75 million euros. Compared to the same period last year (August 2025—5,131.50 million euros), the size of the Republic of Moldova’s financial safety net increased by more than 250 million euros.

The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) will publish the factors behind the explosive growth in reserves at the end of the summer later, when it releases its monthly results. The current level of reserves guarantees the full stability of the Moldovan leu and covers the country’s necessary imports for many months to come, which is critically important given the macroeconomic challenges in the region.
