The number of unemployed people in Germany in August of this year remained above the 3-million mark amid a continuing slump in the labor market, despite recent positive signs in the economy, according to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, citing data from the German Federal Employment Agency (BA).
According to the BA, the number of unemployed in the country rose by 54,000 in August compared to the previous month and by 36,000 year-over-year, reaching 3,061,000 people.
As a result, the unemployment rate in August stood at 6.5%, which is 0.1 percentage points higher than in July of this year.
Andrea Nahles, head of the Federal Employment Agency, stated that the weak labor market trends observed in recent months continue. “In August, the labor market did not show any significant trends beyond traditional seasonal factors,” the Anadolu Agency quoted Nales as saying.
The publication notes that in Germany, with the start of the summer vacation period, the number of unemployed in July exceeded 3 million for the first time since April.
Experts note that the steady rise in unemployment observed since July is driven not only by seasonal factors but also by cyclical weakness in the economy.
However, some experts expect that the recently strengthening signs of economic growth may have a positive impact on the German labor market in the future.
