The travel advisories were updated on August 28. The threat level has not changed and remains at the highest level—Level 4: Do Not Travel.
The State Department advises Americans already in Ukraine to monitor the situation and be prepared to leave their location quickly if necessary. Citizens are also advised to respond to air raid alerts, identify the locations of the nearest shelters in advance, and avoid demonstrations and large gatherings of people.
The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv remains open, but its staff are restricted from traveling outside the capital. Special permission is required for such travel. Family members of U.S. government employees are not permitted to remain in Ukraine.
The notice also states that Ukraine’s airspace remains closed to U.S. civilian aviation. In certain regions, restrictions related to martial law are in effect, including curfews and document checks.
It should be noted that the U.S. State Department had previously updated its travel advisories for U.S. citizens due to security threats in various countries. In February, Americans were advised to leave Iran, and in May, the U.S. Embassy in London urged citizens to exercise caution due to an increased terrorist threat in the United Kingdom.
