Ion Sterian
According to a decree signed and published on Friday to mark Independence Day, President Maia Sandu awarded Ion Sterian the “Order of Liberty.” This award is granted in recognition of public service to citizens and institutions that have distinguished themselves through their activities in various fields, such as education, culture, public administration, defense and security, the rule of law and public order, the media, and energy, reports the Mediafax news agency.
“The awards were presented in recognition of exceptional service to the state, professionalism, and hard work carried out in areas of vital importance for strengthening the rule of law and the development of the Republic of Moldova, as well as for significant contributions to promoting cultural and national values, and the image and interests of our country on the international stage,” according to a press release from the Office of the President of the Republic of Moldova.
Transgaz’s Role in Moldova
On September 19, 2023, Transgaz, Romania’s national natural gas transmission operator, officially assumed, through its subsidiary Vestmoldtransgaz, the operation, loading, and transporting natural gas in the Republic of Moldova from the Russian giant Gazprom. This is part of the Chisinau authorities’ strategy to bring their activities into line with European regulatory requirements.
“Romania, through Transgaz and ORSOM, together with the European Union, played a decisive role in this process, ensuring both short-term stability of supplies and clear prospects for long-term development and integration,” the Moldovan Ministry of Energy stated in its comprehensive response to a Mediafax inquiry last September, around the time of the parliamentary elections.
Ion Sterian, CEO of Transgaz, also spoke in detail about the level of investment that has led to the diversification of sources and ensured the security of supply for residents and industry in Moldova.
“Since then, we have been operating without interruption; we have ensured a peaceful and stable gas supply for the citizens of Moldova. Thanks to these investments, we have connected the Republic of Moldova to Romania’s gas transmission infrastructure and, through Romanian interconnections, to the European gas transmission infrastructure, which has allowed Moldova—having abandoned Russian gas—to source gas from wherever necessary and ensure its energy security. “Thus, the Republic of Moldova, which had been dependent on a single gas source—Gazprom—has, thanks to the interconnector and these investments, gained the ability to diversify its gas supply sources,” explained the head of Transgaz.
