In South Korea, innovation in rainwater management has reached a new level: instead of draining into storm water channels and polluting rivers, cities are using a system that turns the streets into a kind of giant sponge. Hidden beneath the asphalt are huge underground reservoirs that accumulate every drop of rain and allow it to be used as efficiently as possible.

In Moldova, one mayor’s office has, on average, about 2,700 inhabitants. This is 18 times less than, for example, in Latvia, with which Moldova is comparable in terms of territory and population. The density of mayoralties makes Moldova one of the most fragmented in Europe: there are 27 mayoralties per 1,000 km², while in Georgia there are almost 30 times fewer.

Urban mobility and “green agenda” are among the priorities of Ungheni local authorities to improve the quality of life of citizens.

The Agency for Regional Development “Centru” (ADR Centru), Ungheni municipality and the company Aedificator S.R.L. have signed a construction contract for the implementation of the project “Modernization and reconstruction of road infrastructure to ensure access to the free economic zone (FEZ) “Ungheni-Business”.

The total cost of the project is 80 thousand Canadian dollars (over one million lei). Up to 60 thousand Canadian dollars (about 760 thousand lei) is provided by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives program, and the rest of the sum is invested by the local authorities of the “northern capital”.

The deputy chairman of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, Gheorghe Leichu, sent an official appeal to the Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Feridun Sinirlioglu, outlining the position of the People’s Assembly regarding the current socio-political situation and the observance of the rights of the autonomy.

On the way to Europe, Moldova’s internal situation is heating up, connected with relations between Chisinau and the autonomous territorial unit of Gagauzia in the south of the country.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has reacted to the calls made by politicians and mayors to the government against the background of rising fuel prices. He characterized them as “panic and speculation”, which are used “not only at gas stations, but also in the public space”.

The Government is launching a pilot program to replace elevators in apartment buildings. At the initial stage, the program will be a pilot one, and its implementation will last for one year. 40 million lei has been allocated for the first stage.

The General Directorate of Education, Youth and Sports of Chisinau (DGETS) announced the launch of a municipal program of co-financing sports projects and activities in 2026, Logos Press reports.

Projects under the program “Europe Nearby”, through which the modernization of local roads is financed, continue to be implemented in many settlements of the republic. In February, 74 road repair projects were financed under this program. One project, in Ciorescu commune, Chisinau mun. Chisinau, has been completed. This is evidenced by the data provided by the National Bureau of Regional and Local Development.

Oknica district mayors warn: “Forced unification of mayoralties violates the constitutional principle and jeopardizes the future of the villages.”

In order to unblock the situation with the approval of the municipality’s budget for the current year, the Mayor’s Office is ready to waive the sanitary tax (taxa de salubrizare). It was 10 lei per month (120 lei per year) for each registered adult resident.

As of today, the Chisinau municipality will have four deputy mayors, as it has been the case for the last six years. These are Olesa Pshenicki, who will be responsible for the financial sector in the capital’s activity, and Victor Pruteanu, responsible for the social direction.

A referendum is the only correct and legal solution to the process of voluntary unification of mayoralties. Only citizens themselves, not councilors or mayors, should decide on their liquidation. This opinion was expressed by members of the Congress of Local Authorities of Moldova (CALM) after analyzing the proposals of the Cabinet of Ministers to simplify the procedure of merging local authorities.

More than 50 Moldovan mayors and vice-mayors, as well as representatives of environmental and energy organizations from the Republic of Moldova, participated in the GREEN ENERGY EXPO & ROMENVIROTEC exhibition, held this week at ROMEXPO Bucharest.

The voluntary association process should not be rushed, but phased and improved with additional incentive mechanisms.

The process of voluntary unification of mayoralties will be adjusted by changing the methodology. Local authorities will be given more freedom in decision-making. The government’s proposals were presented today by the government’s secretary-general, Aleksey Buzu.
