Under pressure from the public, the authorities have promised to review the VAT on hygiene products

She said that this issue is not being ignored, and that the VAT regime for this category of goods may be reviewed during the finalisation of tax policy.

‘We are aware of the discussions and criticism regarding the imposition of VAT on sanitary products and assure you that these are not being ignored. We are currently in the process of finalising our tax policy, and all proposals are being carefully analysed. This includes a review of the VAT regime for sanitary products,” the minister stated on social media.

The statement came against the backdrop of public debate surrounding the taxation of sanitary products and calls to review the tax regime applied to them. Former Health Minister Ala Nemerenko even joked about this proposal, stating that the Republic of Moldova would now ‘have the strongest budget in the world’.

It should be noted that the current version of the draft budget and tax policy provides for an increase in the VAT rate on feminine hygiene products to the standard 20 per cent, instead of the current 8 per cent. According to the former health minister, this measure will automatically lead to a 12–15 per cent rise in the prices of such products.

UPDATE 19:00

VAT on hygiene products will not increase. They will remain at the reduced VAT rate, the authorities decided to abandon the previously announced increase. “It was a wrong decision. We are correcting it,” Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said.
