
Eugen Tomac
Eugen Tomac (44), a politician close to former President Traian Basescu (who recently regained Moldovan citizenship), is also known for his role in developing Moldova’s relations with neighboring Romania, as well as with the European Union. He is currently serving his second term as an MEP for the People’s Movement party, which he leads.
From 2009 to 2012, he served as Secretary of State of the Department for Romanians Abroad, and since the fall of 2025, he has been Nicusor Dan’s honorary advisor for relations with Romanians abroad.
In the European Parliament, he is a member of the Delegation to the EU-Republic of Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee and a member of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly.
Eugen Tomac was born in Babele village, Sofiane-Trubaiovetsa commune, Izmail district, Odessa region, in the territory of the former Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. He moved to Romania at the age of 17 on a scholarship program offered by the Romanian government to ethnic Romanians from neighboring countries.
Tomac graduated from the Faculty of History of the University of Bucharest in 2003 and began his career as a journalist at publications such as Ziua, Confluenţe, Radio România Cultural, TVR and Magazin Istoric magazine.
Romania’s constitution provides that he has 10 days from the date of the proposal to draw up a government program and a list of ministers.
