The increase in Ukrainian grain transit is putting pressure on logistics in Moldova

An analysis of official data on the flow of Ukrainian grain into the Republic of Moldova shows that speculation regarding a possible glut in the local market is not borne out by the figures; the real problem lies in the logistical bottlenecks caused by the massive increase in transit traffic.

The difference between products destined for the domestic market and those merely in transit was highlighted by former Prime Minister Ion Chicu, who presented official data obtained from the authorities.

“From the statistical data from the Customs Service, we do not see any grain from Ukraine entering our market and having any impact. For example, in the case of wheat, this year’s imports of 656 tonnes practically match last year’s figure of 654 tonnes. Between 1 August and 31 October, imports accounted for just 0.34 per cent of the total quantity of wheat, maize and sunflower seeds brought in from Ukraine, with the majority being in transit,” the MP noted.

However, the main pressure is on the transport networks, where transit volumes have risen massively due to the destruction of infrastructure in the neighbouring country.

“Whilst there have been no changes to imports, there have clearly been major changes in transit. Last year we had just 122 tonnes of wheat in transit, whereas this year we are talking about 149,111 tonnes – an exponential increase. For obvious reasons, Ukraine’s infrastructure has been destroyed by bombing, and the territory of the Republic of Moldova is being used extensively for transit. This situation is affecting our producers’ exports due to severe problems arising in the supply chains.”

Chișinău and Bucharest must step up their dialogue

To unblock traffic at the border and protect local farmers, close cooperation and swift action at government level between Chișinău and Bucharest are required.

“The Moldovan authorities should take a different approach and reach an agreement with the Romanian side to ease this traffic. They must ensure that at the country’s exit points, at Giurgiulești or Costești, we no longer have these enormous queues of lorries. If the authorities do not prioritise these discussions and measures to improve traffic flow with Romania, our producers will continue to suffer directly as a result of these logistical shortcomings.”

We would like to remind you that, previously, MPs from the ‘Democrația Acasă’ party published video footage showing several railway wagons in the Giurgiulești port area, claiming that they were transporting
