The village did not initiate the voluntary merger, although it supports the idea of administrative reform. At the same time, the mayor’s office believes that the form of merger proposed by the government does not reflect local realities.

As Mayor Ion Byzu explained, on August 12, the State Chancellery sent a notice regarding the inclusion of the commune in a cluster centered in the city of Cantemir. The 11-day deadline proved insufficient for meaningful consultations with residents.

Therefore, he is requesting that the regulatory merger process be suspended and cites the villagers’ desire to retain their own local administration.

“The imposed merger will marginalize the village and hinder its economic development and revenue,” the mayor explained. He justified his position by citing the village’s “unfavorable” geographical location.

“Kyrpesht risks becoming an isolated settlement within the Kantemir cluster,” he said. “Although today the village has its own revenue, which allows it to develop independently. Moreover, the majority of residents have expressed a desire to retain the mayor’s office so that it remains closer to the people.”

Ion Byzu warns that an imposed reform could destroy local democracy, as happened in Georgia, where the decision-making process became detached from the citizens. He insists on an individual analysis of each settlement when making decisions.
