He wrote about this on the social media platform Truth Social.
“Let all Canadian companies doing business with America move to the United States immediately. …When you move back, there will be no TARIFFS!” Trump said.
According to him, many Canadian companies had previously left the U.S. due to the “stupidity of the American leadership.”
Relations between the U.S. and Canada have deteriorated due to trade disputes. On August 22, after negotiations broke down, the United States imposed 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods worth about $20 billion. Canada announced retaliatory measures against a number of U.S. goods, including steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, and electronics. These measures are set to take effect on September 8, according to Bloomberg, citing Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Trump later stated that, starting January 1, 2027, tariffs on Canadian automobiles, auto parts, and steel will also rise to 50 percent. In addition, he accused Ottawa of imposing excessive tariffs on U.S. agricultural products.
Earlier last week, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Trump could not be trusted and accused him of constantly changing the terms of trade agreements between the two countries. In response, the U.S. president called Canada’s leadership “clowns” and threatened the country with consequences for continuing its current policy toward Washington.
According to Politico, the breakdown of trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada was linked to changes that the Canadian side introduced late in the discussions. However, the Canadian prime minister stated that it was the American side that changed the terms late in the process.
