At that time, the minister stated: “Latvia will not accept new migrants and will not pay for them. We will provide support and assistance to other states.”
The speech emphasized that Latvia will participate in the EU solidarity mechanism through alternative measures, sharing experience, knowledge and other support.
The Foreign Ministry explains that in accordance with the EU regulation on asylum and migration, Latvia has decided not to fulfill its contribution to the solidarity mechanism by accepting migrants. Instead, the country chose alternative forms of participation.
Next week, on June 12, a new migration solidarity mechanism will come into force, which stipulates that EU states will have to choose one of three ways to help countries experiencing strong migration pressure: accepting migrants, making financial contributions or implementing alternative support measures.
