This is the first time Xi Jinping has spoken so directly about the Russian-Ukrainian war in a dialog with Washington, meduza writes, citing the Financial Times and the materials of the American side, prepared following the meeting of the US and Chinese leaders in Beijing. Earlier, according to FT sources, the Chinese leader discussed the conflict with former US President Joe Biden, but avoided public assessments of the Kremlin’s decision to invade.

The newspaper’s interlocutors describe Xi and Trump’s talks as “frank and direct.” During the meeting, the FT claims, the Chinese president also suggested that the US, China and Russia jointly confront the International Criminal Court.

The publication came hours before Vladimir Putin’s visit to China. The Russian president is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on the evening of May 19. On May 20, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping will hold an official meeting ceremony in Tiananmen Square, after which the leaders will hold talks in a small group.

The meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping took place in Beijing on May 14 and was the first visit of an American president to China since 2017.
