Commemorative Coins for Independence Day

The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) put two new coins into circulation on August 26 to mark the 35th anniversary of the Republic of Moldova’s declaration of independence: a silver collector’s coin with a face value of 100 lei and a commemorative coin for circulation with a face value of 10 lei.

Both coins are part of a series of commemorative coins dedicated to key historical events in the country. The National Bank issued its previous major set of three coins five years ago, to mark the 30th anniversary of Moldova’s independence.

The central bank has prepared two versions of the coins: one made of precious metal for numismatists, and the other made of a standard alloy for everyday use.

The limited edition of the silver coin consists of only 1,300 pieces. Each coin is encased in a transparent protective capsule, comes with a premium gift box, and is accompanied by an official certificate of authenticity from the NBM.

The 10-leu commemorative coins will circulate in the real economy throughout the country. Residents of Moldova will be able to receive them as change in stores or when making payments at commercial banks.

The design of the new coins reflects in detail the main state symbols and historical moments of the Republic of Moldova. The central themes of the design are national unity, the Declaration of Independence, and state symbols.

The silver coin (100 lei) features intricate artistic engraving with colored elements.

The reverse side of the coin, which has no numismatic value, features an entire historical scene—a crowd of people with their hands raised in the Great National Assembly Square in 1991—symbolizing the people’s aspiration for the country’s sovereignty.
