Different countries have different tariffs, and these vary considerably.
Electricity tariffs vary by a factor of 4.7, whilst natural gas tariffs vary by a factor of 22.9.
Let’s start with neighbouring Romania, on which Moldova is almost entirely dependent for imports of both electricity and natural gas.
In August, the Romanian population paid 6.18 MDL for electricity and 10.99 Moldovan lei for gas. In other words, gas there is 2.3 times cheaper than here.
Ukraine: electricity – 1.69, gas – 2.85 lei.
Hungary: electricity – 2.08, gas – 5.30 lei.
Croatia: electricity – 3.57, gas – 2.85 lei.
Natural gas is more expensive than here only in Sweden (65.26 lei), the Netherlands (37.47), France (28.03), Austria (28.05), Portugal (27.45) and Italy (27.23).
“EU countries as a whole are 87.3 per cent dependent on gas imports. And even in this situation, having turned their backs on cheap Russian gas, the majority of countries (their populations) still pay less for gas than we do in Moldova,” the analyst concludes.
