Vladimir Voronin
“I do not know what will happen to this European Union. I am not certain it will exist for much longer. On the contrary, I expect the EU to collapse in the wake of these protests, which began as a result of the policies being pursued and, most importantly, the economic collapse and economic decline already taking place in many countries,” Voronin said in an interview with a television station.
According to him, his attitude towards the EU changed after he learnt more about how European institutions operate.
“I have come to understand what this means, what bureaucracy exists in Brussels, where over 200,000 people work within the European Union’s administrative apparatus,” said the former president.
Voronin also expressed his doubts regarding the stability of the euro and the way its exchange rate is set in relation to other currencies.
“I am not sure about this currency called the euro either, because there is a formula used to calculate how much money there should be in a country. I do not know what formula the European Union leaders used to calculate the euro’s exchange rate against other currencies — our leu, the rouble, the dollar and all the world’s currencies. I believe, for some reason, that they are simply printing money. I know that these two factories are in Germany and are printing euros round the clock,” he said.
It is worth noting that, after coming to power in 2001, the PCRM initiated the country’s European modernisation, and in 2005 Parliament unanimously adopted a declaration on the objectives of European integration. As President of the Republic of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin established and led the country’s first National Commission for European Modernisation.
