This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the relevant petition published on the portal of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

Information about ethnic origin is proposed to be returned to birth certificates, paper passports, ID-cards and the digital application “Diya”. The inclusion of the “ethnicity” column in the documents should be completely voluntary – only at the request of the citizen himself or the child’s parents. The author of the petition, Bohdan Volsky, believes that this will help national self-identification and solve certain legal problems of Ukrainians abroad.”

“Many citizens of Ukraine face legal difficulties abroad (for example, when confirming their ethnic origin, drawing up documents in consular offices or researching their family tree in state archives), because modern Ukrainian documents do not contain information about the nationality of the parents or the person himself,” states the author of the petition.

“Preservation and official recognition of our national identity is a step towards strengthening the Ukrainian state and respect for each of its citizens,” the author of the petition concluded.

The petition appeared on the government website on Wednesday, May 20. As of noon on Monday, May 25, only 47 signatures (out of the required 25 thousand) have been collected under the petition. At the same time, 86 days are left till the end of the collection of signatures.
