According to the U.S. military, the airstrike was carried out to “reduce Iran’s ability to attack civilian vessels” in the Strait of Hormuz.

On the evening of July 13, U.S. President Donald Trump officially notified Congress of the resumption of military operations against Iran. Trump, according to CNN, stated that these were “limited strikes” carried out in a manner designed to “minimize civilian casualties.”

For its part, Reuters reports, Iran claimed to have attacked an airbase in Jordan used by the U.S. military. Authorities in Jordan and Bahrain reported that air defense systems successfully repelled the Iranian attacks.

Iranian missiles also struck the tankers “Mombasa” and “Al-Bahia” in the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reports, citing the UAE Ministry of Defense. Iranian authorities stated that the tankers had violated the ban on passage through the Strait of Hormuz, according to meduza.io.
