U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Canada wants to enjoy the benefits of being a U.S. state without actually becoming one, amid the tariff dispute between the two countries.
Trump made the statement on his social media account, commenting on the tariff dispute with Canada.
According to Trump, Canada has for many years received money from American farmers while imposing tariffs on their products, but the U.S. is no longer willing to allow this.
“Canada wants to enjoy the benefits of being a state without actually becoming one,” Trump said.
Earlier, following the U.S. decision to impose 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods worth a total of about $20 billion starting August 22, 2026, Canada announced its intention to take retaliatory measures and reported that it was suspending negotiations.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that details of new tariff measures against the U.S., which will take effect on September 8, will be announced in the coming days.
