Commenting on the decision to open the labor market for EU citizens, the head of state said that this is a natural step based on the principles of reciprocity. At the same time, she noted that the interest of the EU citizens in employment in Moldova remains extremely low and called the existing fears unfounded.
“The distance between the recognition of the labor shortage and the fear of a “huge wave of migrants” overwhelming Moldova is very big. Believe me, EU citizens do not want to come to work in our country en masse,” the head of state added.
Maia Sandu also assured that the state keeps strict control over the hiring of workers from non-EU countries. The hiring process is regulated by strict procedures.
“This is not an uncontrolled process where anyone from anywhere in the world can come to work in Moldova. There are procedures and state institutions that very carefully check the requests of companies that want to attract foreign labor force,” Maia Sandu stressed.
The head of state reiterated that the lack of human resources is an acute problem for the business environment, from large foreign investors to small enterprises in rural areas.
“Everyone speaks about it: companies coming to Moldova, investors, as well as our small enterprises in rural areas. Everyone complains about the lack of hands. The labor force is available, but people are not interested for one reason or another – either the salaries are not high enough and do not meet their expectations, or because of other factors,” the President concluded.
