It states:

“The statements by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that there are currently no prospects for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to join the European Union as full member states, and that one of the options being discussed at the European level is the introduction of associate member status, are an extremely important political signal that the Chisinau authorities cannot ignore.”

The “Alliance of Moldovans” political party believes that these statements significantly alter the official discourse that the PAS party has promoted in recent years, presenting European integration as a virtually inevitable process devoid of serious obstacles.

The German chancellor has openly stated that the expansion of the European Union is a complex and lengthy process, and that one of the solutions under consideration could be granting candidate countries interim status—without voting rights in European institutions and without all the rights enjoyed by EU member states. Moreover, he acknowledged that Ukraine rejects such a scenario.

According to the “Alliance of Moldovans,” the citizens of the Republic of Moldova have the right to know whether a similar model is being considered for our country, and whether the authorities have discussed or agreed, in the course of their dialogue with European partners, to the possibility of obtaining a status other than full membership.

Dumitru Roibu, chairman of the “Alliance of Moldovans” political party, stated that the time has come to move beyond slogans and begin speaking openly about the real conditions of the European integration process.

“For many years, citizens have been told that the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union is only a matter of time. Today, one of the leaders of the most influential EU member states has publicly stated that there are currently no prospects for full membership, and that the status of an associate member is being discussed—without voting rights and without all the benefits enjoyed by member states. The authorities can no longer hide these realities. People must know the truth and understand what is being negotiated on behalf of the Republic of Moldova,” stated Dumitru Roibu.

There Are Questions

The party believes that the executive branch and the parliamentary majority are obligated to publicly answer a number of questions:

– Was the Republic of Moldova informed about the concept of associate membership prior to the German chancellor’s statements?

– Are there official discussions underway regarding the possibility of applying such a model to the Republic of Moldova?

– Does the government believe that this particular status is the goal for which citizens were called upon to support European integration?

– Why have the authorities still not explained that the accession process could take a form other than obtaining full membership in the European Union?

The “Alliance of Moldovans” emphasizes that European integration cannot be built on political promises, inflated expectations, or a lack of transparency. In the group’s view, such an important process must be accompanied by accurate information for citizens and an open public discussion about the benefits, obligations, and limitations of each stage.

The party also believes that the national interests of the Republic of Moldova must be defended through a balanced and responsible foreign policy, and that any decision capable of affecting the country’s future must be openly discussed with the public. According to the party, the German chancellor’s statements indicate that the European Union’s enlargement process is significantly more complex than the current government portrays it, and that citizens deserve clear answers rather than campaign slogans.

The “Alliance of Moldovans” political party calls on the presidency, the government, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to publicly present the Republic of Moldova’s official position on the proposal for associate membership and to inform the public whether such a scenario is being considered within the framework of relations with the European Union.
