The selected companies will receive equipment, services and specialized technical assistance worth up to €85,000 each. All of this will contribute to the establishment of new waste treatment facilities, modernization and expansion of existing facilities, implementation of technical solutions to reduce environmental impact, and development of digital systems and IT solutions for waste management.
“Moldova’s economic growth is closely linked to natural resources, from agriculture to energy. However, climate change, pollution and unsustainable resource use threaten this foundation. The cost of inaction is significant. A circular economy can create jobs, reduce dependence on imports and attract investment – all while protecting the environment,” said Adam Grodzicki, Deputy Head of the Cooperation Section of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova.
“A circular economy requires sustainable investment. It requires businesses to be ready to innovate, modernize their operations and expand their waste treatment capacity. This is why we are particularly pleased that through our partnership with the European Union, five waste management companies in the Republic of Moldova will strengthen and expand their waste management and recycling infrastructure. Only through the joint efforts of public institutions, development partners and the private sector can we accelerate the green transition,” said Seher Ariner, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in the Republic of Moldova.
The companies were selected through a competitive bidding process taking into account the expected impact on increasing waste treatment capacity, technical feasibility of investments, financial sustainability and operational capacity of the applicants to implement the projects. The beneficiaries’ own contribution is equal to the value of the in-kind support provided.
“For our company, the investments supported by the UNDP-EU project represent more than just equipment modernization. They will allow us to expand our recycling capacity and strengthen our contribution to the collection, treatment and utilization of plastic waste in the municipality of Balti and the northern region of Moldova. The investments will contribute to increasing the volume of recyclable waste, developing a circular economy and reducing environmental impact, setting the stage for a more efficient and sustainable recycling infrastructure in the long term,” said Ion Zajac, Head of Waste Management.
With this support, the European Union and UNDP contribute to the development of a circular economy in the Republic of Moldova, strengthening the recycling sector and reducing the environmental impact of waste.
