Education unions will hold a protest on August 19

The Chisinau Regional Sectoral Trade Union Center for Education and Science announced a protest to be held outside the Government building on August 19. The protest was prompted by uncertainty surrounding pay raises for education sector workers.

The union states that it decided to stage a protest after negotiations with the authorities failed to resolve the issue of wages. At the beginning of 2026, education workers’ salaries were not adjusted for inflation. The union had agreed to wait until September 1, but judging by the authorities’ latest statements, a raise as of September 1 is highly unlikely.

“In previous years, although the adjustment of salaries for inflation was rather symbolic and insufficient, it was still carried out. In 2026, education workers did not even receive this minimum, while prices and the cost of living continued to rise,” the union’s statement reads.

According to union representatives, if dialogue no longer yields results, the organization is obligated to use the legal tools at its disposal to protect the interests of the workers it represents.

A few days ago, the unions sent an open letter demanding that previously made commitments be fulfilled and that the salaries of education workers be increased effective September 1, 2026. As of now, there has been no response to the letter.
